Reasons To AVOID The iPod!!

I’ve read several articles and have been asked a lot of questions regarding the trend of couples deciding to use an iPod instead of a DJ at their wedding reception. I can certainly appreciate the need to cut costs if a couple is struggling to pay for their wedding, but entertainment is quite possibly the worst place to make that cut. So much of the success of a wedding reception is tied directly to both the music being played and the timely, appropriate, and professional announcements made by an experienced emcee – I really can’t comprehend the decision. Why would people even consider doing this?

Budget – Supposedly using an iPod is less expensive than a DJ. Even after purchasing enough music to cover a four to five hour wedding and renting a professional sound system, it will probably cost less than hiring a professional wedding DJ.
Programming Control – Couples that use an iPod have total control over the songs on the playlist, which they generate before the wedding, and the order in which those songs are played. I’ve seen it mentioned that this “makes the music more personal for the bride and groom.”
Not Cheesy – Many couples that choose to use an iPod say they are doing so in order to prevent a “cheesy” wedding DJ from ruining their wedding. They have seen bad wedding DJs in the past, and don’t want to have inflatable instruments, party hats, and overzealous line dance instruction at their wedding.

The playlist control argument baffles me a bit. Where are all these DJs coming from that don’t do exactly what you want for your wedding? Even more important, why the heck are people hiring them? When you interview a potential DJ, simply tell them that you plan on submitting a comprehensive playlist for the evening and that they are not to add songs to it, remove songs from it, change the order of the songs, or take requests from your guests. Ensure that he is completely cooperative with this requirement (and if he’s not, keep interviewing until you find someone who is). Congratulations, you’ve just established total control over the music at your wedding. Most professionals, while they may not agree wholeheartedly with this approach, are willing to accommodate it. If they have a problem with this request, there is a very simple solution – DON’T HIRE THEM!

Another factor to consider is an iPod’s inability to beatmix – blending songs together and keeping the beat going from one song to the next. Beatmixing is a tool used religiously by good DJs and is impossible for an iPod to accomplish (plus, it takes a bit of planning ahead to put songs with a similar tempo next to one another in a set). On top of this lack of mixing, an iPod doesn’t have the ability to remove the two-second gap between songs while it plays. Mixing creates energy on the dance floor and allows for ZERO dull moments!

None of your guests will remember their meal (unless it’s really bad), your centerpieces, your chairs, your favors, your invitations, your cake (unless it’s really bad), or your bouquet. They certainly won’t remember your wedding pictures or video, because chances are they will never see them. What they will remember, however, is if they had a good time. This, to me, makes the case for spending more money on entertainment and cutting costs somewhere else. My advice is to seek the services of an experienced professional, one that shares your views and will honor your requests. Your guests will thank you, and you will be able to enjoy your wedding reception in the care of someone you trust.

Aside from all of the above, don't forget the importance of liability insurance, equipment knowledge (should troubleshooting be needed), and the personality behind the performer all go hand in hand when working to deliver an unforgettable evening for you and your guests.

Rick was an excellent and personable DJ, and E.C.F. entertainment

was also incredibly easy to work with. Rick asked thoughtful

questions beforehand as to what our preferences were and was

We had a wonderful experience working with Josh! Right from the

start he was excited about working with us, stayed in contact with

us and did an amazing job keeping true to what our tates were. The

music/dj were one of top things our guests couldn't stop raving

It has been a while since I've had the chance to chop up some fresh videos, but here is some footage from a recent prom at one my most performed-at venues...Danversport Yacht Club. The kids were great and very down for a good time. Boston's Best DJs know how to customize each performance to those in front of us. Whether the group is large, small, diverse...we each pride ourselves in being able to bring everyone to the dance floor all night long!

Proms give us a chance to find good paying work during the early spring each year. Here in New England, with the change of the seasons, weddings are populated during certain times of the year. Normally, when wedding season is slow, that usually means school is in session...great news for us!

It's another wedding celebration hosted by yours truly. This time we go into Ron and Olivia's celebration at the Pinehills Golf Club. This has been a location I have hit this year a number of times. Mind you, I don't have any business ties to these venues (not that I wouldn't mind!), so these encounters are completely random and by chance. I really enjoy hitting venues more than once in a given season. The familiarity with the load in/out, the staff...the setup...it is something that puts me at ease. Enjoy the footage, I do apologize for the lack of brightness...but trust...it was on!!

So my friend Phil put me on to this track, and I am enthralled with the dub-step sound. Riding this wave of electronic music lately, combined with a love for a down tempo vibe, I have this on constant replay. This is not a new track, and if you notice, this video has almost 3 MILLION views! Such a hot tune for cruising late night during these summer months after a late night gig.

I caught this video on MTVU this morning, and it is GREAT! The video is hilarious and the song is hot. This is the vibe I am really into right now...4 to the Floor rhythms with a very pop-y lead vocal. The melody is infectious, and I am glad that it doesn't go too deep into large verse sections. Repetitive and catchy as hell!

Meet Levi Maestro. I was unaware of this character until just recently when I was visiting TPPS. Levi is from California, an avid skateboarder, and a charismatic director and front man. I was connected to www.maestroknows.com and saw a thumbnail featuring Boston native Johnny Cupcakes. Investing the time into watching this episode hooked me and I watched them all. A whole afternoon. Just like that.

I am a huge Bun B. fan, so I really enjoyed his episode. 9th Wonder's too. I enjoy Levi's insight and connection with those he meets. In addition, the connection he makes with me as the viewer puts me right there on site with him. The boundary lines are blurred a bit by his genuine honesty wrapped up in an excited - but super appreciative - kid in a candy store. Not an ounce of Veruca Salt in his body. Refreshing.

Legendary Guru Passes Away

So sad to learn that Guru of the legendary Gangstarr crew passed away...finally losing his battle with cancer. Gangstarr played such an instrumental role in my maturity into the genre I fell in love with at a very early age. Guru's lyrical presence !!! - as well as being a Boston native - !!! combined with DJ Premier's so unbelievably New York sound and influential scratch patterns, were just what I needed as I catapulted into the entertainment world.

Today, put some ... Step In The Arena ... Moment Of Truth ... Hard To Earn ... maybe something from the Jazzmatazz series .... on repeat all day long.

Load up on some ... Just To Get A Rep ... You Know My Steez ... Mass Appeal ... for me, I loved that record with Craig David on JzzMtzz Vol. 3 ... it's called No More, google it ... on your iPods and cell phones.

Personally, I definitely noticed a vocal tone change since we

last heard him with Barrington Levy on his debut. At the time, he was

catching heat over his vocal tone being so much like Biggie's.

This is quite different. Much more...Lloyd Banks...in his tone.

I am unsure of the producer, but the beat is interesting at first, but loses

me after 2 minutes in. This is a definite possible radio add for Thurd Thurs.,

but I can't see much crossover into clubs or commercial radio.

I had the privilege of hosting Dwight and Nicole last night at JamSpot.

The Boston Phoenix calls them "soulful and enriching,"

The duo has been no stranger to our Somerville location, filling the halls

What's Going On World...

J Boogz and I have found some folks that customize skins for the Numark NS7, our current favorite toy. The NS7 has been a conversation starter with young and old alike, and that is really why I like using at wedding events. I always get the father/uncle/aunt/grandfather of the bride to come up and talk about their vinyl and 45s collection. The fact that I am incorporating computer use with the visual of the analog format, I can engage my 2nd generation guests with the NS7. My younger generation look at the unit, and almost expect it. Long story short, it is awesome. The look of the NS7 is somewhat industrial...metallic silvers and blacks...and the custom skins can really add some pop! With the recent acquisition of the design template, we have been able to create unique designs...Check the DJ SHYNE NS7 - no doubt the white is so FRESH!

Herb Alpert's "Rise" is one of my favorite big band/jazz tunes to include in my Cocktail Hour/Dinner set. Aside from the official version being 7 1/2 minutes in length, usually giving me enough time to check on the bridal party before introductions. For those who didn't know, it also supplies the principle sample in The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Hypnotize" record.

At the 3:25 mark, you will hear that distinct that distinct down beat, the delay on the guitar is bananas, and it makes the tune an instant hit. I Got That Cool...

First, I must apologize for the image's quality as it was taken with the trusty BB camera. Second, think about what you see for a minute. This is an image hand drawn by my own 6 yr. old niece while passing time after school. I deemed it so thought provoking I asked if I could keep it. I then framed it and hung it inside my JamSpot studio in Wakefield.

At first glance...yes, a dog with funny colors...typical of a youngster's creative mind when asked to free-draw. It reminds me of the scene in Adam Sandler's "Billy Madison" where he is in the class with Ms. Lippy during arts and crafts. He says he drew the blue duck because he had never seen a blue duck before. This is typical thinking, I would suspect, of someone at that grade level.

Sure the dog in the picture has funny qualities and colors, but the quote makes it stand out. YES I AM.

Simple but profound I think. YES I AM....a dog with a weird nose, ears that stand up (blue ones at that), and green fur...but YES I AM. A great message for everyone out there. Whatever you might be described as...tall, skinny, short, fat, clumsy, etc...just remember...

A way to bring back Boom Boom Pow in a new, fresh approach. Our weddings this year will certainly get hit up with this one, just the way our 75 Conga Street mash-up - featuring Pitbull, Gloria Estefan and good ol' Mr. C - got our dance floors up in a friendzy!

This one featured the BEP crew with some fresh sampling to get the crowd pumped up! Love it!

Long time, no post. I know...Busy part of the wedding season is the first quarter of the new year. Trying to capitalize on the large number of proposals over the Christmas/NYE/Valentine's Day stretch is key. So far, this year is booking like mad, for me and the whole E.C.F. Entertainment team. We are looking forward to delivering one hell of a 2010 for all of our couples this upcoming season. We are all dying for the warm weather, for more reasons than just the sun's heat!

We are currently developing a new home for E.C.F. Entertainment, fusing both our contemporary, energetic style with our love and passion for the wedding market. As it stands, our website is split into both "Nightlife" and "Formal" sections, but with the lines being continuously blurred, we thought we'd give a fresh face to the site...while I can't post a link, here is a screen shot or two...

So I get word of this story in the news regarding a certain local radio station's special contest, promising an all expenses paid for, top-notch wedding for a lucky couple. Couples "auditioned" as finalists, who the public would then vote for online. This one particular couple, while blessed with a wonderful family, had been through some tumultuous times. Caring for an ill sister's children, up to and beyond her passing, and opening her doors to family young and old had prevented this couple's overdue official wedding Ceremony.

The contest concluded, this couple mentioned above had received the most votes and were thrilled to finally get the wedding of their dreams. Shortly before going to claim their prize, the radio station hosting the contest informed the participants that there were errors in the voting system, so much so that the prize would be revoked and no longer offered. No attempt at "reimbursing" the couple had been made, or even offered. Word of such a sad story quickly reached the local papers, and our couple's story began swirling around town. The most recent article included a piece from a neighboring country club offering their space for no charge, as a sort of consolation prize. With that, E.C.F.'s Josh "J Boogz" Field immediately phoned said country club offering his services should the couple accept the offer. What do you know...the couple got the wedding of the dreams. At an upscale country club, with one of New England's premier DJs at the helm. I just today received this alert on E.C.F.'s WeddingWire profile...

..."Josh from E.C.F. Entertainment was excellent. He brought an assistant Mark and they were both friendly, courteous, professional and fun! Josh got on the dance floor to show our wedding guests how to do line dances and was very fun when doing so. As the Bride I felt Josh made sure I had fun and got me on the dance floor to dance with my guests. The selection of music was great. My husband and I found that the majority of our guests stayed until the very end which we were surprised about. We had aunts and uncles who we thought would leave early but they didn't and that was because they had so much fun dancing. Josh is great for this business, he is very energetic and it shows that he loves and enjoys what he does.
We would definitely use Josh's services again and would highly recommend him!"...

May Be Obvious But...

This might be easily evident, but with all the commotion regarding the H1N1 virus and the debate regarding the vaccine, this will certainly help as a simple reminder! We can all pay attention to these tips a little more consistently during this time. I'll thank my dad for passing this along!

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist)
having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in
institutions like Hinduja Hospital, Bombay Hospital, Saifee Hospital,
Tata Memorial etc. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine
Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical
Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is
important for all to know.

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a
global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming
into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1
is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1
infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms
and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not
fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced.

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official
communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any
part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (or Listerine). H1N1 takes two/three
days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate
and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation.
Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and
powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day
with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra
Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the
nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped
in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.

5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C
(Amla and other citrus fruits). If you have to supplement with Vitamin
C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. Drink as much warm liquid (tea, coffee, etc) as you can.
Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the
reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat
into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

What's Good Blog...

So as it seems - I have nearly neglected you. my dear blog page, for a majority of the summer. I felt the strong urge for your comfort as we slow into the winter months. Oh Blog! You have kept me warm in the coldest of months! And although I've stayed away far too long...I beg for your forgiveness and let me scribe upon you once again!!

As it goes...the summer months are just so insanely busy in the life of a mobile DJ and entrepreneur. The world doesn't sleep, and if you are interested in being successful - yuuuuuuup! - then you shouldn't either.

I had provided the MP3 to my DJs in my monthly pool in the month of March...but still, why was I feeling/seeing/hearing like I was experiencing deja vu. Last Weekend Recap...

This past weekend was NUTTY! E.C.F. was everywhere and put in a ton of work opening our season with an explosive BANG! We were literally like chicken's with our head's cut off!

I was in Rhode Island starting my wedding season, performing for a great couple, Friday evening...and we rocked into the night! They were a terrific group and I had a blast. Saturday was my first experience as DJ/Comedian, where I was asked to perform a roast for a 50 year old husband and father of two. With some help from my wife, it really came out awesome! The group really enjoyed it. I felt like Dean Martin...except not as wasted.

Sunday, Boogz and I were featured at the Guilded Bride's Wedding Event Showcase at the Algonquian Club in downtown Boston. B.E.W. put up the booths, and we were lucky enough to perform for such an exclusive event. Very nice.

Speaking of Boogz, he performed with the Boston Common Band in Rhode Island at the Hotel Viking as well. Here is a slideshow of pictures taken from the event, as well as a clip from the performance...featuring Scotty on vocals!

Is Straight BANANAS!!

This is the second year the two entities have teamed up to throw one RIDICULOUS affair. The Onyx Informer is a bi-monthly magazine "that seeks to capture the thoughts and feelings of students of color at Northeastern." They have done a terrific job at maintaining their presence throughout campus, a difficult task for most student-run organizations. E.C.F. Entertainment jumped at the opportunity to co-host their Old School Throwdown, featuring music from the 70's, 80's & 90's. People come out dressed to impress, and the tunes were so nostalgic. Everyone was sent into a time warp, and was worked into a daze of shell-toed adidas and track suits...pastels and neons were abundant. This is just such a fun event...We hope to be a part of it every year!

So it's been a long while since I've last posted. March has been a crazy month for me. Things started off with a BANG! I flew out to Jamaica for a destination wedding I performed for Sarah & Scott Zdanis. What a trip! What a gig! Unreal is the only way to describe it. The bride and groom were super accommodating, and made sure everything was great...and I think I can say we rocked the house!

I didn't shoot any video. Well...one video. I wanted to, but was just very involved with the night. I took this as I entered the location...before any guests arrived and the band rehearsed. The rest, as the video says...remains a mystery! Can you handle the suspense??

There were other great events through the mid-March. I went back to Harvard University's Hip Hop Archive (Shout out to Alvin Carter) for an event there with PopMaster Fabel, of Rock Steady Crew fame.

Make sure you log on to www.hiphoparchive.org and check the pics on the home page! I worked a showcase with Boston Event Works at the Hard Rock Cafe downtown. J Boogz made his debut at the B.E.W. Showcases, and that went solid.

But that's where things went bad. I got so sick. So Sick. I wasn't fully removed from JA, and the cold weather just had it in for me.

Not to fear...I recovered. And well enough to set the Tri-Sigma Formal @ The Colonnade in Boston ON FIRE!! J Boogz and BoomBoom came through and were a huge help! Check some pics to wet your palette, video gig log to come soon!

So I've found that Sports and Music, while seemingly perfectly made for one another, are not as closely connected - at least from my own personal experience. Picture this. You are back in Junior High, or High School, and you are imagining the cliques that existed. You have the pretty girl, cheerleader group. You have the nerd group. You've got the jocks...and you've got the rebellious musicians. Usually, music was something kids could turn to as their savior when they weren't athletically gifted or popular.

I know you have seen the likes of Shaq rapping...

These were the exceptions...not the rule. Anyways, I noticed that a lot of the musicians that I know, those that I get the chance to have conversation with, are oblivious to what's going on in the sports world. I guess I wanted to say that I may be part of the exception as well. I have grown up absolutely loving sports. I should be more clear. Absolutely loving BOSTON sports...and maybe only slightly enjoying nation/global wide sports (I do thoroughly enjoy the Olympics though)

On that note. Big news from the New England Patriots! With only 12-16 hours into the NFL's free agency period, that Pats have moved crowd-favorite Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs!

This looks to be a pre-cursor to further moves that may involve Matt Cassell. This may increase the value of the Patriots package, therefore increasing the return from KC. This may lead to a first round pick in this upcoming draft - which happens to be the 3rd overall pick, seeing how KC was horrible last season.

The Pats also signed RB Fred Taylor today!

I was just getting into the NFL seriously around the time Jacksonville and Carolina came into the league. I remember using Taylor on Super Tecmo Bowl...and I think it's a great addition. Although there are TOO MANY backs on the team now...Maroney, Morris, Jordan, Green-Ellis...and now...Fred Taylor. Interesting.

Before I go...I'm off to the Celtics game tonight. They take on the Indiana Pacers and return home after an awkwardly long road trip, interrupted by the All-Star Game. Tonight may be the debut of Stephon Marbury in the back court for the C's. We'll see if we see a hungry ball player...looking to rejuvenate his career and earn another big contract next year, as well as be a part of a REAL championship contender, or will he be STARbury and be a problem chemistry-wise. I know that once he gets into the game, the Garden will give him a standing ovation...but I know everyone will be holding their breath...anticipating the turn of Stephon. Expect the best, plan for the worst.

The Celtics have the upper hand in all of this as well. Very similar to Manny to L.A. or Moss to that Pats. Short money...I think Marbury is slated to earn the vet minimum...something like 1.5 million. The C's could drop Stephon like a bad habit if he acts up or proves to be too rusty to contribute much of anything. Remember, Marbury hasn't played in a competitive game in 13 months, and has NEVER played in a meaningful game in the NBA

Food For Thought...Aging Gracefully...

So the other night, the wife found an all white hair among the tuft of brown on top of my head. Happy. Negative. It got me thinking about aging and how it affects different people at different times. Heredity dictates its speed, but some go bald, and some don't. Some go grey, and others don't. My dude Omi Taylor posted this note with 10 steps to aging gracefully...Enjoy!

#1 - Breath correctly. Fresh air is more important than water, exercise or food. Google "Qui Gong." It's key to regulating every function in your body.

#2 - Stay hydrated. Drink 8 cups of water per day, sipping slowly. Never drink more than a cup in a 1 hour period.

#3 - Be in Motion. Google "Tai Chi" and "Tai Chi Chuan." These should be a discipline in addition to yoga (or pilates), jogging and a weight bearing routine. Take up Kung Fu too if you have time, or any combat art. It's just as much to do with stress reduction as it is to do with conditioning.

#4 - Minimize Stress. Remember disease is when your body is not at ease. Get enough sleep too. Sleep in accord with what your body says it needs. For some it's 10 hours. For others it's 6.

#5 - Find happiness. Positive excitement and joy offset negative feelings and thoughts like animocity and spite, which only decay you. Yeah, easier said than done, but if you don't try, you already failed.

#6 - Live Righteously. Each of us has a different view on what that means. But avoid guilt, shame, regret, dissapointment, sin, mistakes, etc. whenever possible and forgive yourself and others regularly. Also - honor your parents and ancestors.

#7 - Eat balanced, but avoid refined sugar because it breaks down your skin's elasticity. Each persons eating is dependant on the person. There is no rule - only to focus your diet on what balances your body in your environment and for your circumstances. For some that may mean a lot of fat. For others it means low fat. Everyone is different. Still, live food is healthier than dead food.

#8 - Have sex. Have babies. (Getting married might not be a bad idea either)... Biologically it's a key purpose of our self to be in pairs and to procreate. Keep in line with nature and have nature on your side. Not just this, but LOVE. Love someone. Love something. Be loved if that's at all possible.

#9 - Minimize sun. For all those who tesitify the sun is good for you and tell me to look at equatorial countries as a key point, do note the life span of said people. Surely go out in the sun some, but don't bake yourself. When we bake meats we kill it even more. When we bake ourselves we kill us too. We are not plants. We are mammals.

#10 - Play. Okay when I say this, I don't mean adult play like going out drinking. No. I mean, get some crayons and get busy. Play with sticks and action figures. No, video games don't count! Paint, play trucks, make snowmen, rollerskate and do what kids do. That doesn't mean avoid adulthood. Just don't lose your childhood and if you have, go find it.

Macbook Wheeeeeeeel It Up Selektah!!

So the Macbook Wheel was shown around the world as Apple's newest innovation. Sharing with the delight in the scroll wheel on most iPods, manufacturers decided to make everything your computer does operational via this wheel. It works on the same premiss as the iPod where the large click wheel is an enter key. The one thing I notice in this video is that typing becomes more difficult if anything. I think, that unless you can touch the screen to enter letters, the wheel would be tough to use. Check the dude near the end of the vid who is simply an avid Apple fan. His lil email was all kinds of messed up. Sure he was just testing it out, but it got me thinking. If you are savvy on a qwerty keyboard...this is a downgrade. It does have intuitive software that will help in the formation of our sentences. On one hand, it will help with everyone's grammar online. It will predict sentences you are intending to type, and would hopefully do so in a grammatically correct fashion. On the other hand, it seems time consuming. Like text messaging with the ABC on the #2 key and having to cycle through letters in that way. Overall cool in aesthetics, but maybe not super practical. Right now at least...

I want to send well wishes to everybody this New Years. NYE is a night that I have vowed not to work. The money would have to be too good...Most inquiries can't satisfy the requirement. But that is me, and has always been. In a calendar year, I have less than 5 dates that are untouchable. NYE is one. This year I am going up to NH. A small location outside of the city serves an amazing NYE dinner. My girl and I will stay there over night...and head back home the following day. Time to put away your 2008, and sport your 2009. This post comes off the heals of dropping by Statik Selektah's blog and seeing these clips of what looks like an unbelievable, no pun intended, candid discussion with not only Peter Rosenberg, but the live crowd as well. Notice that Preem looks relaxed and willing to share some behind the scenes stories which I absolutely love. I built my blog space and youtube space in hopes of providing the same type of open look at what happens when nobody really knows what's happening.

This clip includes some discussion on Nas and the creation of "Nas Is Like" off of the I Am... album. He includes a great story about he and Showbiz going to cop a collection of wax from some old dude in NYC. One obscure piece that was destined for the trash heap, became the infamous sample for this ridiculous track.

And in case you forgot...

This next clip dives into some dope discussion regarding Biggie and what went down in the recording of "Unbelievable" for the Ready To Die album. He talks about kicking it with the likes of Biggie, Chubb Rock and others. The last story in the final minute of the clip is crazy eerie...watch completely!

Rain & Red Sox

On a rainy Thursday, what better to keep the blues away than some quality sports discussion. I haven't posted on my beloved Red Sox since the Coco Crisp deal about a month ago. So here is a run down of some new things that are of interest. With the GM winter meetings coming to a close in Las Vegas later today, there are some cool, new revelations that affect my fan-dom.

NEW LOGO?

This might be a tough one to swallow. The big ol' B is legendary. I realize and fully comprehend the business behind the new cap (and from what I hear there are new away shirts too - no image yet though!) and what types of new revenue will be garnered by making such a move. I don't as of yet know if they will be worn in actual game play...because as we all know, there are hundreds of variations to the Red Sox cap, but the traditional blue hat/red B was always seen on the field. I had a DOPE all black one in my younger days, but one thing remained constant among most of the different caps...they had the B! If we see AL MVP Dustin Pedroia rocking the new cap in actual game play...sales will shoot through the roof. I'd say I'm fairly indifferent to the change, but am intrigued by the business behind it and what is to come.

NEW ENEMY!!

C.C. Sabathia. Won an AL Cy-Young two seasons ago...the same season where Josh Beckett (who came in a close second for the same award) ACED him out during the playoffs. Sabathia is reportedly going to receive a seven-year, 161 million dollar deal, richest in MLB history for a pitcher, by the New York Yankees. He teased Red Sox fans early in the bidding war...not by showing interest in playing for Boston...but instead by dismissing the Yankees and looking to stay in the NL/relocate to the West Coast. The interesting tidbit is that Sabathia has been granted a three year buy out option, which would allow him to skate after the 2011 season. With that nugget of info, we know that he is guaranteed 69 million over the three seasons. He'll be good, no doubt...but he scored a major FAIL in the playoffs against Boston...TWICE. If he does the same in the three seasons to come, NY fans will be up his ass faster than a swift kick from Chuck Norris

NEW FRIEND??

Mark Teixeira may end up in a Red Sox uniform by Christmas. Groundwork has been laid out over the course of the winter meetings, and Theo Epstein has his eyes set on the Teixeira prize. The Sox jump up as lead contender, especially after the Sabathia deal with the Yanks pulls NY out of the race. The reported deal sought by Teixeira is up near 10 years, 200 million dollar range. As Sox fans, we know how valuable Manny was to the protection of David Ortiz, and how devastating that one-two punch was. With Ortiz looking forward to a healthy season upcoming, the addition of Teixeira may reinstate that powerful middle of the lineup wallop the Sox are looking for. Teixeira hit 33 homers and batted in 121 runs last season, and has never hit less than 26 dingers in his six years in baseball. What that does to the current make up of the team, I'm not sure. Your puzzle pieces up to be moved include Ortiz...which IMO gets ruled out because the signing of Teixeira seems in large part important to ADD to Ortiz...not to replace him. Yooooook is a integral piece as well. Teixeira plays a gold glove 1st base, so does Kevin, but there are only 9 possible positions available, and this creates the need for management creativity if they keep both Yook and Teixeira. The last piece is Mike Lowell. Beloved Mike Lowell who earned the World Series MVP in 2008. However, he is the most expendable. He is older. Teixeira is in his prime. Yook can move to third and (hopefully) play well there. Lowell is coming off major hip reconstruction, which might make him tougher to move...but reports say he will be good to go come spring training.

The Roots Hit Your TV Screen...Late Nights

Legendary Hip Hop band the Roots will serve as the house band on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," which premieres March 2 on NBC. Fallon, who is filling the slot to be vacated by Conan O'Brien, made the announcement Monday on the show's newly launched Web site. Fallon is taking over "Late Night" for Conan O'Brien, who is in turn taking over "The Tonight Show" from Jay Leno. Big Congrats due to the band. Hopefully Jimmy doesn't f*** things up! Conan is a legend!!

Big Up To Termanology!

I've got to shout out Lawrence, MA native and true Hip Hop representative Termanology on winning "OUTSTANDING HIP-HOP ARTIST OF THE YEAR" at the Boston Music Awards this past week. Term has been a beast his whole career. Making good business moves over the past 12-24 months has really put him, and in effect Lawrence MA, on the map. I had Term and DJ Deadeye (official ST. Da Squad DJ) as guests on E.C.F. Radio back in 2005...well before the hits with DJ Premier hit the masses...right around the time he dropped the "Out The Gate" mixtape with D.C. the MIDI Alien. The whole show was recorded on, what was then the hottest sh*t around - the mini-disc! But of course, who knows what happened to the collection of discs that was to be my radio show archive. Anyway...shout out to Termanology. If you don't know...take a listen and GET FAMILIAR!!
